Readability Checker
Estimate English reading ease, grade level and sentence length.
What Is a Readability Checker?
A readability checker helps you assess how difficult a passage may be to read by analyzing measurable features of its writing, such as sentence length and word complexity. Readability tests can express results as a reading-ease score or an estimated school grade, depending on the method used. Writers use these indicators to review articles, instructions, and website copy, then revise confusing passages. A score is a guide, not proof that readers understand the text.

Understand Readability Scores and Write Clearer Website Content
Visitors rarely read a webpage under ideal conditions. They scan headings, compare options, look for an answer, or try to complete a task on a small screen. A long sentence can slow them down, and unfamiliar wording can make an otherwise accurate explanation harder to follow. Readability analysis offers a repeatable way to identify some of those obstacles before a page is published.
The aim is not to chase the lowest possible grade level. A technical guide needs precise terms; a checkout message needs immediate clarity. Start with the people who will use the page, assess a representative passage, and revise what genuinely makes their task difficult. The sections below explain established readability methods and editing practices. They do not claim that any particular score or control was observed in a live test of this WordPress tool.

Choose Text That Represents What Your Audience Reads
For an article, analyze a substantial section of the actual body copy rather than its headline alone. For a product page, include the explanation and purchasing instructions people depend on. A handful of words may not give a meaningful indication of the language used across a longer document.
Exclude unrelated menus and footer text when assessing article copy, but retain essential instructions. Save the passage for a consistent second check. Do not submit confidential information without understanding a service’s data policy.
Understand What Flesch Reading Ease Measures
Flesch Reading Ease is a widely used measure based on two averages: words per sentence and syllables per word. Longer sentences and more syllables generally lower the score. Microsoft documents the standard English formula as:
Reading Ease = 206.835 − 1.015 × (words ÷ sentences) − 84.6 × (syllables ÷ words)
Around 60–70 is commonly considered accessible general-purpose English. Higher usually means easier. Scores can fall outside 0–100, and the formula cannot judge truth, logic, or reader familiarity.
Read a Flesch-Kincaid Grade Level Correctly
Flesch-Kincaid Grade Level uses the same two inputs but converts them into an approximate United States school-grade scale. The published formula is:
Grade Level = 0.39 × (words ÷ sentences) + 11.8 × (syllables ÷ words) − 15.59
Grade 9 estimates text difficulty, not anyone’s education or actual comprehension. Subject knowledge and reading conditions still matter. Compare drafts rather than label readers.
Calculate a Readability Example Step by Step
Suppose a sample contains 100 words, five sentences, and 150 syllables. Its average sentence length is 20 words, while its average word length is 1.5 syllables. Applying the two formulas gives these illustrative results:
| Measure | Calculation | Result |
|---|---|---|
| Words per sentence | 100 ÷ 5 | 20 |
| Syllables per word | 150 ÷ 100 | 1.5 |
| Flesch Reading Ease | 206.835 − 1.015 × 20 − 84.6 × 1.5 | 59.6 |
| Flesch-Kincaid Grade | 0.39 × 20 + 11.8 × 1.5 − 15.59 | 9.9 |
These hypothetical calculations were not captured from the live tool. Reading Ease rises for easier text; grade level generally falls. Do not confuse their directions.
Why Two Readability Checkers Can Disagree
Even with identical published formulas, software may produce different results because it identifies words, syllables, and sentence boundaries differently. Consider Dr., decimal numbers, abbreviations, hyphenated phrases, URLs, and product model names. A simple sentence splitter may treat punctuation inside these items as the end of a sentence, while another implementation may not.
Syllable counters may use pronunciation dictionaries or spelling rules. Compare drafts consistently, and do not assume undocumented scoring methods.
Set a Reading Target That Fits the Task
A general consumer guide often benefits from familiar words and direct instructions. A technical troubleshooting page may need terms such as canonical URL, schema validation, or HTTP response. Removing essential terms can make the writing less accurate, even if its numerical score improves. Introduce necessary terminology, explain it once in ordinary language, and keep it consistent.
Ask what readers already know and whether an example helps. For safety-critical instructions, review accuracy with qualified specialists and test understanding with readers.
Improve a Difficult Sentence Without Losing Meaning
Consider this deliberately wordy instruction:
In order to facilitate successful completion of the registration procedure, it is necessary for prospective applicants to provide the information requested within the fields displayed below.
A clearer revision is:
To register, complete the fields below. Check your details before submitting the form.
The revision starts with the task, but adds a check absent from the original. Confirm that instruction fits the real form. Preserve conditions, deadlines, and exceptions when simplifying.
Look Beyond Average Sentence Length
Short sentences are helpful when they communicate a clear point, but a sequence of disconnected fragments can become tiring. Mix sentence lengths when that improves rhythm and explanation. Prefer concrete verbs over vague abstractions: send the file is usually easier to act on than initiate transmission of the document.
Give paragraphs one main purpose, lead with critical information, and number actual steps. Formula scores cannot assess navigation, text contrast, or whether links make sense.
Apply Readability Checks to SEO Articles and WordPress Pages
Clear text can help visitors find answers and complete tasks, but there is no universal readability score that guarantees a Google ranking or an AI-search citation. Google’s public guidance emphasizes helpful, reliable, people-first content rather than a required Flesch score. A piece can earn an easy numerical grade while remaining thin, misleading, or irrelevant.
For a WordPress article, review the introduction, the main explanation, and any instructions separately. A short snippet or meta description may be too small to interpret statistically, so edit it primarily for accuracy and search intent. Use the Word and Character Counter when length is the question, and the Text Comparison Tool to review substantive changes between drafts. Those tools address different questions from readability analysis.
Prepare Copied HTML and Other Sources Carefully
Copying text from a webpage can introduce menu labels, markup, unusual whitespace, and hidden characters that distort a sample. If you need article text without tags, an HTML-to-Text Converter may help prepare it. The Text Cleaner and Formatter is useful for removing stray spacing before a controlled comparison.
Preserve meaningful paragraph breaks and labels. Consider scoring tables, code, or identifiers separately from prose to avoid misleading results.
Use a Revision Loop Instead of Chasing a Perfect Number
- Identify the intended audience and the task the passage must support.
- Choose a representative English-language sample and save the original.
- Review any available readability result alongside the actual text.
- Mark long sentences, unfamiliar terms, and unclear instructions.
- Rewrite for meaning, accuracy, and action rather than a fixed target alone.
- Check the revised passage with the same method, then read it aloud or ask a suitable reader to try it.
If a revision raises the estimated ease score but removes an important condition, restore the condition and explain it more clearly. The final question is whether the reader can understand and use the information, not whether every sentence meets a numerical cutoff.
Recognize Language and Content Limitations
The standard Flesch formulas described here were developed for English. Do not apply their numeric interpretations unchanged to Urdu, Arabic, Spanish, or multilingual passages. Those languages have different word and syllable patterns, and some use other readability methods. English-first algorithms may also perform poorly on acronyms, equations, fragments, legal citations, tables, or code samples.
Short inputs and technical vocabulary can distort scores. The live tool’s browser-versus-server data handling has not been independently verified.
Frequently Asked Questions About Readability
Is a higher readability score always better?
Not necessarily. A higher Flesch Reading Ease score generally indicates simpler sentence and word patterns, but clarity also depends on the audience, facts, organization, and task. Preserve necessary detail.
Are Reading Ease and grade level the same result?
No. Reading Ease usually becomes higher as a passage becomes easier by its formula. Flesch-Kincaid Grade Level is an estimated US school grade that usually becomes lower for easier text.
Does a readability checker fix grammar automatically?
Readability measurement and grammar correction are different functions. Some writing products combine them, but a readability score alone does not identify every grammar error or suggest an appropriate rewrite.
What readability grade is best for SEO?
There is no single Google-mandated reading grade. Choose vocabulary and structure for your actual visitors, provide complete answers, and make important information easy to locate.
Can I test a headline or a two-sentence description?
You can examine short wording manually, but formula-based results for very small samples can be unstable. For short snippets, prioritize direct language, accuracy, and the reader’s immediate question.
